Addiction Recovery

In IFS alcohol and drug abuse are considered 'parts' that represent an escape, last line of defense to overwhelming issues. IFS looks to identify and address the underlying issues that activate this 'firefighter part'.

With over 6 years of group leadership in alcohol and drug abuse treatment I have seen this IFS approach work effectively for guests who may choose total abstinence or who may  continue to use in moderation. Still, moderation is risky as other parts may trigger this 'firefighter' in the future.

  • IFS Approach in Recovery

Addictive activation based on IFS is triggered by the emotional discharge of parts called 'exiles', which represent trauma(s) in the past that are stuck and unresolved. Rather than continuing to suppress these exiles, with them continuing to erupt and activating addictive compensating behavior I work to identify, befriend and help these parts to release and resolve their traumatic hold. In completing this work the major activating stimulus for addictive escape is eliminated. While not the total solution to addiction this work significantly reduces the triggering action to relapse and greatly increases the ability to sustain sobriety.

  • Using the Transition Model for Change in Addictive Behavior

In addition to IFS therapy I use my change and transition model to assist in developing an ability to manage ongoing life challenges without triggering addictive behavior. The model focuses on three key areas, 'saying goodbye', 'exploring the present'' and 'moving on'. The skills learned in this part of the rehabilitation process help facing life challenges in a way that facilitates continued growth and builds self-confidence.

  • Coordination with Other Support Services

Recovery also includes having the availability to identify and engage in other community resources that support recovery and sobriety. This can include finding an AA or NA meeting that works for you, support for managing withdrawal symptoms in the initial phase of recovery and physical and financial support to assure positive changes can be supported in recovery and beyond to sustain sobriety.

Make it stand out.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
